The Original 16 Hot Wheels Cars: Complete 1968 Casting Checklist

Custom Camaro reference image from the Muncle Mikes 1968 casting archive

The Original 16 are the sixteen castings in Hot Wheels' first-year 1968 lineup. They are not a single contemporary product with one age rating or package. A first-year collection requires identifying each actual casting and distinguishing early originals from later reissues.

The complete 1968 checklist

The On Line Redline Guide's first-year index documents this lineup. Use the links below to open the corresponding Muncle Mikes casting guides.

Keep later cars out of the first-year list

Lotus Turbine, Custom Dodge Charger and Volkswagen Beach Bomb appear in the reference's 1969 group, not the Original 16. The list also does not include a Toyota 2000GT or several unspecified Mustangs. Compare the annual casting index.

Accurate names make a checklist usable. A similarly named model or an older-looking body cannot fill a slot without a configuration check.

Decide what counts toward your collection

You may want original examples, later tributes to the sixteen designs or a mixed educational display. Each is a reasonable goal, but record which kind of car occupies each position.

Choose acceptable condition and packaging before buying. A playworn original and a pristine modern reissue answer different collecting purposes.

Examine more than the red wheel stripe

Compare the body, base wording, glazing, interior and wheel arrangement with the specific casting reference. Record replaced parts, repainting and missing components rather than assuming every unusual combination is a factory variation.

The Redline identification guide provides the broader inspection method. Preserve an uncertain original before attempting cleaning or restoration.

Build the collection one identified car at a time

Save actual-item photographs and a source for each entry. Compare completed sales only after matching the version, condition and package; this checklist is not a price guide or an inventory promise.

Browse loose Hot Wheels and carded collectibles by their individual descriptions. Keep the Original 16 list as the reference, not as an assumption that every historical target is currently stocked.

Modern descendants are not first-year originals

Use later cars to enjoy the design history, but keep them outside a checklist that specifically requires original 1968 examples.
Later purple and orange Hot Wheels Twin Mill

Later design descendant

Twin Mill — purple & orange

A later Twin Mill collectible. It carries the design name forward but is not a 1968 original.

2002 Hot Wheels Classic 32 Ford Vicky with red-line styled wheels

Later red-line styling

2002 Classic ’32 Ford Vicky

A later factory release showing why red-line styling alone does not establish Redline-era identity.

Record each slot as original, tribute or later release

Record field What to enter
Casting name Use one of the sixteen checklist names, not a general body style.
Release type Original 1968 example, later reissue, tribute or design descendant.
Observed details Body, base text, glazing, interior, wheels and any disclosed replacement parts.
Evidence Save clear photographs of the actual item and the source used for identification.
Condition Describe wear, repainting, missing pieces and packaging without turning condition into an unsupported value claim.

A complete set can mean sixteen authenticated 1968 examples, sixteen later tributes, or a mixed history display. Labeling the release type keeps the checklist honest and makes future upgrades easy to plan.

Why Twin Mill is not on the 1968 checklist

Twin Mill is one of the best-known original Hot Wheels designs, but it debuted after the first-year group. A later Twin Mill is useful in a design-history display, not as a substitute for one of the sixteen 1968 slots. The same rule applies to later cars with red-line-styled wheels: visual cues can support identification, but the release year and casting record decide where the car belongs.
