Model Rocket Launch Checklist for Teachers and Group Leaders

Updated October 15, 2026.
A classroom or youth-program launch needs two checklists: one for building and one for range operations. Complete both before the event date.
Program planning
- Participant count and age range confirmed
- Individual, pair or team builds assigned
- Exact rocket and current instructions selected
- Build sessions and cure time scheduled
- Launch date and weather backup date set
- Property permission and local requirements confirmed
Build-station supplies
- One complete kit per assigned builder or team
- Correct adhesives, rulers, pencils, sandpaper, tape and finishing supplies
- Adult-controlled tools where required
- Labels or storage trays so parts do not mix between kits
- Inspection step for fins, launch lugs, recovery attachment and motor mount
Flight quantities
Multiply the number of rockets by the planned flights. Then compare the exact package counts for motors, starters, plugs and recovery wadding. Use only motor codes approved for the exact rocket.
Launch equipment
- Complete compatible pad and electrical controller
- Correct launch rod or rail
- Fresh controller batteries
- Blast deflector and safety interlock
- Enough time and adult staff to inspect, load, launch and clear each flight
Assign adult range roles
- Range lead
- Rocket and motor inspection
- Pad preparation and access control
- Launch control and countdown
- Spectator boundary supervision
- Flight tracking and recovery
- Recordkeeping
Before every flight
Confirm the range and sky are clear, spectators are at the required distance, the rocket moves freely on the guide, the exact motor is installed and the recovery system is prepared. Use a loud countdown.
Misfire and recovery procedure
For a misfire, release the switch, remove the interlock or disconnect the battery, and follow the current required waiting period before approaching. Never recover a rocket from power lines, tall trees or another dangerous location.
Use the program request form, compare group rocket packs, and keep the current NAR safety code available.
