American Diorama Polyresin vs. Diecast-Metal Figures: What Should You Buy?

American Diorama sells both polyresin and diecast-metal figures. Choose the right scale and pose before choosing a material. There is no useful rule that every product in one scale uses the same construction, or that a metal figure automatically suits your scene better.

Two 1:43 sets in the collection illustrate the difference particularly well: 4X4 Mechanics Set 1 is described as hand-painted diecast metal, while Car Wash Girls Set 1 is described as hand-painted polyresin.

The 4X4 Mechanics Set 1, AD43001, contains two figures and a board accessory. Its listed figure heights are approximately 1–1.75 inches, and the figures are hand-painted diecast metal.

Choose this set when your display needs the mechanic theme and its included board. The car shown is not included. Material does not establish whether a particular figure reaches your model’s engine bay or fits beneath its chassis.

A polyresin example in the same scale

The Dorothy and Barbara Car Wash Girls Set 1, 38355, supplies two hand-painted polyresin figures in 1:43. Their listed heights are also approximately 1–1.75 inches. The pictured car is excluded.

The shared scale and similar height range do not make these the same purchase. One supplies a mechanic-oriented pair with a board; the other supplies the named car-wash pair. Choose the activity your display needs, then review the individual poses in the product photos.

Painted figures are not automatically painting kits

The word “polyresin” identifies material, not an unfinished state. The 1:18 4X4 Mechanic Figure 1, AD18011, is specifically described as hand-painted polyresin and approximately four inches tall.

Do not order a finished figure expecting a sprue of separate body parts, spare arms or an unpainted model kit unless the listing expressly includes them. Equally, do not assume every diecast-metal listing promises a particular hand-painting process; check the exact product description.

Material is not a durability guarantee

Small hands, projecting tools and other fine details still require care. None of the examples here carries a hands-on drop-test or bending-test claim from Muncle Mikes. Do not force a pose to fit a vehicle or use a delicate accessory as a handle.

For a portable display, plan how each piece will be contained during transport rather than assuming it will stay upright because of its material. Any mounting product must be compatible with the figure’s finish and the display surface; a universal adhesive recommendation would be inappropriate without that information.

Can the two materials share a scene?

They can be considered together when their scale, pose, colors and purpose suit the same layout. Matching the construction material is less important than avoiding a figure that visibly overwhelms the car. No physical connection is required for people simply standing beside a vehicle.

Before ordering, check the exact item number, scale, material, painted finish, quantity and excluded scenery. Then choose the figure you actually need rather than treating “metal” or “resin” as a quality ranking.
