Display Cases for Fw 190, Ta 152 and Condor Models: What Size Fits?

A case fits only when its usable interior accommodates the complete aircraft in the intended pose, including the stand. A label such as suitable for 1:72 aircraft is not enough: a compact Fw 190 and a long-winged Ta 152 share a scale but need different clearances.

Choose the model and intended display position first, then size the enclosure. Avoid ordering a case around a guessed fuselage length.

Compare aircraft before planning the case

Start with maximum length and span

The Legion Black 13 is currently listed at approximately 4.75 inches long and 5.75 inches across the wings. The Oxford AC028 Ta 152H-1 is approximately 5.75 inches long and 7.75 inches wide.

The Ta 152's extra requirement is primarily across the wings. A case chosen because both models are around five to six inches long can therefore be inappropriate for the larger span.

The Condor DOD31562 is listed at approximately 6.5 inches long with a 9-inch span. Its 1:144 scale does not make it the smallest physical model.

Calculate the actual clearance

For illustration, centering a model with a 7.75-inch estimated span inside an 8.25-inch-wide enclosure would leave only a quarter-inch beside each wing tip. That ignores measurement uncertainty, internal fittings and the path needed to lower a cover.

This is arithmetic, not a recommendation for a particular case. A model set at an angle can require a different bounding width and depth. Barely exceeding a catalog number is not the same as confirming a comfortable fit.

Measure the mounted height

A stand raises the model above its base. Measure the complete arrangement from the bottom of the support to the highest point of the aircraft, including the tail and intended angle.

Check the base's length and width separately. A broad support may need room in a different direction from the aircraft, while a small base does not cancel the wings extending beyond it.

Distinguish exterior and interior case sizes

Exterior dimensions tell you whether the enclosure fits the shelf. Usable interior dimensions tell you whether it fits the model. Thick bases, frames, recessed floors or door hardware may reduce that interior space.

For a hinged cabinet, account for the door's movement. For a lift-off cover, check the removal path past the wings, tail and propeller. The aircraft should not need to be squeezed through the opening.

Plan safe access after setup

Leave room to support and remove the model as its instructions direct. A packed display can look full while making every later adjustment awkward.

Paper footprints are useful for comparing arrangements, but confirm actual dimensions before making a tight-fit purchase. This guide does not certify a third-party case or a universal enclosure size.
