Motormax Scale Guide: Choosing 1:18, 1:24 or 1:43 for Your Display

Choose a Motormax scale around your available space and the vehicle you want—not around the scale number alone. A smaller denominator generally means a larger replica of the same vehicle, but a compact 1:18 car can still be shorter than a truck offered in a smaller scale.

What changes when you choose a scale?

At an exact 1:18 ratio, one inch on the model represents 18 inches on the full-size vehicle. At 1:24, it represents 24 inches. Two accurately scaled replicas of the same subject would therefore differ in linear size: the 1:18 version would be one-third larger than the 1:24 version.

That calculation does not give the dimensions of every product. Compare the actual model's listed length, width and height, especially when the subjects are different vehicles.

1:43: a compact model with a clear display role

The 2022 Police Interceptor Utility, 79496BW, is approximately 4.5 inches long and includes a plastic showcase. Its body has no opening panels.

This is a practical choice for a compact police-vehicle row or a small desk display. Measure the showcase separately when it must fit an existing shelf: the car's quoted length is not the case's exterior size.

1:24: more room to show opening details

The white 2025 Tahoe Z71, 79392W, measures approximately 8.25 × 3.5 × 3.125 inches. Its front doors and rear gate open.

That offers a different presentation from the small closed-body Ford. It also requires room beside and behind the model if you intend to use those openings. A compartment sized exactly around the closed vehicle may not suit an open-door display.

1:18 does not always mean the longest model

The red Morris Mini Cooper, 73113red, is listed at approximately 7.25 × 3.75 × 3 inches. It has steerable wheels and opening hood and doors. Its listed length is shorter than the 1:24 Tahoe's because the represented vehicles are very different sizes.

For a larger 1:18 subject, the 2015 Fire Marshal Police Interceptor Utility, 73545, lists 11 × 5 × 4 inches and opening front doors. The two 1:18 models do not require interchangeable storage compartments.

How to handle a 1:24 / 1:27 label

The lights-and-sounds RAM Laramie, 79544BKW, is listed under both 1:24 and 1:27, with dimensions of approximately 8.5 × 3 × 3.375 inches.

That combined label is not an offer of two selectable sizes. Use the stated dimensions for space planning and confirm exact scale requirements before adding it to a precision-scaled diorama.

Make three measurements before ordering

Measure usable shelf length, depth and height, then decide whether the model stays packaged. Allow room for its case, mirrors, opening panels and your fingers when removing it. Match a trailer or accessory using usable clearances, not nominal scale alone.
