Tamiya Kit Sizes: 1:24 Cars vs. 1:12 Motorcycles and 1:20 Racers

A Tamiya 1:12 motorcycle can be about as long as a 1:24 car, yet they are not a proportional pair for one realistic scene. Scale is the ratio between the miniature and its full-size subject; actual length also depends on how large that subject is.

Choose scale for the collection you want, then check the finished dimensions of the exact kit. Our Tamiya selection includes 1:24 cars, 1:12 motorcycles and the 1:20 Porsche 935, so a generic model-kit category is not enough to plan a case.

What the ratio actually means

At 1:24, one unit on an ideally scaled model represents 24 of the same units on the original. For the same full-size object, 1:12 would be twice as long as 1:24.

That mathematical relationship does not mean every 1:12 bike is twice the length of every 1:24 car. The real motorcycle and real car start with different dimensions. Use the product measurements rather than comparing the scale labels alone.

1:24 cars: the model's width can change the case choice

The Toyota GR86 24361 is listed by Tamiya at 178 mm long, 74 mm wide and 55 mm high. The Ford GT 24346 is 200 mm long, 94 mm wide and 46 mm high.

The Ford needs more length and width, despite being lower. A narrow case that suits the GR86 cannot be assumed to suit the Ford because both say 1:24.

For an angled display, check the depth of the entire arrangement. Rotating a long car to show more of its side and front can require more space than its straight-on body width.

1:12 motorcycles: check the windshield and stand

The Kawasaki H2R 14131 is listed at 172 mm long, 70 mm wide and 97 mm high. The RoadStar Custom 14135 is 208 mm long, 89 mm wide and 121 mm high.

The RoadStar's taller, wider arrangement makes it a different case-fit question from the H2R. Include any stand and check clearances around the windshield, handlebars and other projecting parts.

A supplied support is not automatically a complete protective showcase. Read the contents carefully before expecting a transparent cover in the box.

1:20 Porsche 935: a larger racing-car format

The Porsche 935 Vaillant kit 20071 is 1:20, with listed dimensions of 235 mm long, 104 mm wide and 65 mm high. The old product URL contains 1:24 wording, but the current product title and kit specifications identify the correct scale.

Do not choose it as a size-matched substitute for a 1:24 Porsche 934. It can be a separate centerpiece, or part of a collection deliberately organized by different scales.

Opening parts need additional clearance

The GMA T.50 24364 is listed as 49 mm high with its engine cover closed and 68.5 mm with the open-cover arrangement. This is a clear example of why closed-model dimensions may not describe your chosen display.

A removable rear cowl placed beside a race car adds a second footprint. Gullwing doors need overhead and side clearance. Decide the presentation before buying a close-fitting cover.

Measure the model, the case interior and the shelf

These are three different spaces. The model's maximum dimensions describe what must fit inside; the case's usable interior describes available clearance; the case's exterior determines how much shelf it occupies.

Leave a margin rather than ordering to an exact nominal dimension. The measurements quoted here are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of your assembled example or a guarantee of accessory compatibility.

Mix scales deliberately

Different-scale models can look good on separate rows or as individual displays. For a proportional garage or street scene, matching scale is a sensible starting point, but physical fit still needs checking.
