Bye-FocalCheck the body before the transparent hood

Bye-Focal stretches a Challenger shape around two engines and covers them with transparent plastic. The hood makes the engine variation interesting, but the condition of the metal body comes first on this casting.

A two-engine Challenger interpretation

Larry Wood’s 1971 Hong Kong Bye-Focal has a black interior, blue glazing and a clear or blue plastic hood. An engine version without the usual injector detail is documented.

A scratched hood or blurred photograph is not enough to identify that variation. Ask for an unobstructed close view that shows the molded engine features without forcing fragile plastic.

Cracking matters more than a color claim

Deterioration of the metal alloy is documented on Bye-Focal. Examine the body for cracks, distortion and loose fragments before moving the hood or attempting any cleaning.

A crack does not reveal its cause by itself. Record what is visible and ask about damage or repairs; do not flex the body to test its strength. Body integrity should remain part of the description even when the finish is an appealing color.

One side graphic was factory applied and the other supplied loose. Missing decoration is a separate issue from missing engine detail.

Show Off deliberately omits the hood

The related 1973 Show Off was made without the plastic hood. Its base was revised for through-hole wheels and protective axle details. A hoodless Bye-Focal and a complete Show Off are not the same condition category.

Compare the base before deciding which one you have. For another casting with a rear cover to inspect, see the AMX/2 guide.

Compare the hood and the underside

A missing hood alone cannot identify Show Off. Match the rest of the assembly before deciding whether a car is complete. Likewise, a listing headed “1972 Bye-Focal II” needs its own casting and package evidence; that wording does not establish an early sequel to the 1971 original.
