Sweet 16The spare wheel is under the trunk lid
This Sweet 16 is the long-engine roadster introduced in 1973. Its little opening trunk hides a spare redline wheel cap, a detail worth checking before calling a loose example complete. It is a different subject from the sixteen castings that launched Hot Wheels in 1968.
The engine gives this casting its name
The original Hong Kong Sweet 16 is documented for 1973 with a black interior and no glazing. Its long engine represents sixteen cylinders.
The 1970 copyright marking reflects the earlier design and name, not a 1970 retail release. Record the complete inscription rather than turning one molded date into the car’s production year.
Open the trunk gently
The rear lid opens to reveal a spare redline wheel cap. On a sound loose example, ask for photographs with the lid closed and gently raised. Check the hinge, lid edges and contents without forcing the movement.
A missing cap and a damaged hinge are separate condition issues. Describe both, along with any replacement part or repair. A neat exterior photo can leave all of this out of view.
Original cars and later reproductions
Mattel reproduced the design for the 30th Anniversary. Those bases do not carry the original Hong Kong marking, and the later interiors are removable and appear in multiple colors. Original interiors are black.
Use those details together. A black cockpit alone cannot prove originality when parts can be changed. Inspect the underside, engine edges and wheel faces, and keep any restoration history with the car.
If you mean the first sixteen Hot Wheels designs, use the collector encyclopedia to find the original lineup. Do not apply this roadster’s release details to that collection, or assume that a later Sweet 16 II is the original 1973 toy.
