Mustang StockerPaint, plating and the hood tell different stories
Mustang Stocker has lived several lives: a painted racer, a chrome showpiece and later striped versions. The chrome car pictured here belongs to the Super Streeters presentation. It should not stand in for every Mustang Stocker release.
A familiar Mustang with a revised hood
Mustang Stocker arrived in the 1975 Flying Colors range as a reworking of Boss Hoss. The exposed engine was removed and a hood restored. Its yellow early finish carried 450 HP striping; a white alternate is also documented.
Look across the hood rather than identifying the casting only from the fastback roofline. Later white GT350-decorated versions used a flatter hood without the earlier power bulge.
Chrome does not mean one release
Chrome versions appeared before the 1978 Super Streeters car. Redline-era Super Chromes and later blackwall presentations need separate identification. Stars-and-stripes decoration also appears in the Loco-Motion history.
The previously documented 1978 Super Streeters configuration uses a chrome body, blackwall wheels and an unpainted metal base. Compare the blue-tinted windows, black interior and red-and-blue decoration with the actual car; do not assign the year from shine alone.
Inspect plating in ordinary light
A bright reflection can hide worn plating. Ask for both sides photographed with soft, even light, then look around the wheel openings, roof edges and body corners. Missing graphics and missing plating are different condition issues, so record them separately.
Check the underside for the actual material and markings. The later black-and-yellow Speed Machines version is documented with a plastic base, which is another reason not to apply one specification to the entire casting family.
Keep the card in the comparison
On a carded example, examine the blister attachment and printed model name as well as the miniature. An old-looking card does not by itself prove that a car and package have always been together.
Choose the release whose finish and graphics you like, then compare examples in similar condition. Browse carded Hot Wheels or loose cars according to how you want to display it.
