Old Number 5 is an open-cab fire engine with plenty of exposed equipment to inspect. On the package pictured here, the circled 1 sits beside the casting name. That collector number is separate from the fire-engine number on the toy.
Start with the hood detail
The 1981 red engine has yellow-and-black No. 5 and Fire Dept hood decoration and blackwall wheels. Versions with and without hood louvers are documented. Louvered Hong Kong examples appear in that year’s record; a Malaysia version follows in 1982.
A straight overhead photograph is more useful than a dramatic low angle here. It should show the molded hood detail and printing clearly enough to distinguish wear from a different configuration.
What the experimental card establishes
The 1989 experimental #1 and 1990 #1 listings use a red engine with tan interior, red Malaysia base and blackwalls. A similar red combination also appears in the 1987 Workhorses record.
A loose red engine therefore does not prove experimental-card origin. Ask for the complete front and back of the actual package, its identifiers and the blister seal. The experimental-card description refers to the presentation; it does not make every associated engine a one-off prototype.
Inspect the equipment, then the finish
Look over the top and from the rear for missing or repaired fittings. The long, narrow parts can hide behind one another in a side photograph. Ask about glue and replacement pieces rather than testing them by pulling.
Check the wheel faces and underside, then place the engine on a flat surface to judge its stance. Record missing equipment separately from chipped paint. For a carded example, a clear view of the car still matters when the card itself looks tidy.
Compare individually photographed loose vehicles using the condition checklist. When packaging drives the price, match the actual card presentation rather than the casting name alone.
