PhantomachineChrome in a Speed Demons blister

Phantomachine’s original chrome finish is shown here in its Speed Demons packaging. The package photograph is useful for recognizing the release, but the toy occupies only a small part of the frame. It should not be used to judge fine surface wear on another example.

The chrome 1987 release

The original 1987 Speed Demons listing identifies the chrome car as Phantomachine, item 3851. Keep the toy and package artwork separate when making an identification: the illustrated creature on the card is not a photograph of the casting.

For a loose chrome car, get a close side view and a readable underside. Reflections can hide the outline of small details or make a broken edge look complete. A broad package photograph is a starting point, not a substitute for those views.

Computer Warrior changes the colors and name

The dark-blue 1996 collector #479 was sold as Computer Warrior. It has red Hot Wheels logos at the rear, a fluorescent-orange China base and five-spoke wheels.

A satin-red Phantomachine followed in the 2008 40 Years of Hot Wheels set, with white-and-gray top decoration and an unpainted China base. These later releases need their own descriptions; neither should be passed off as the original chrome Speed Demon.

Photograph chrome in soft light

A single flash-lit picture can make scratched plating look smooth. Request another angle in diffuse light, especially across the raised edges. Look for dull patches, exposed material and glue around small projections.

Keep cleaning marks and missing plating separate from ordinary reflections in the condition notes. On packaged examples, scratches on the blister can resemble scratches on the car, so ask which surface is affected.

The used-car checklist covers broader repair checks. Compare loose cars using their own close-up photographs.
