VolkswagenThe solid-roof Flying Colors Bug
The orange Volkswagen pictured here has a large insect graphic across a closed roof and an engine exposed at the front. It is the Flying Colors Volkswagen introduced in 1974. A solid roof alone does not make it the earlier no-sunroof Custom Volkswagen collectors discuss.
Two roof designs on the orange car
The Hong Kong Flying Colors casting closes the sunroof opening of the earlier U.S. design. Orange examples have early stripe decoration or the later insect pattern, with through-hole wheels, blue glazing and black or white interiors documented.
Get an overhead view of the entire roof. The insect photograph here is useful for that pattern; it is not a reference for authenticating the striped version.
Stripes deserve closer inspection
Reproduced stripes are known. Ask for sharp close-ups of the printing, roof edges and paint around the windows, along with any history of repainting or disassembly.
A convincing graphic by itself is not enough to establish originality. Keep an uncertain stripe claim out of the price comparison until someone familiar with the variation has examined the actual car.
Turn it over before naming the version
Original Mattel versions have a metal base. The later Wisconsin Toy version uses a black plastic base and darker glazing. Record that combination rather than treating a plastic underside as an unexplained prototype.
Inspect the front engine, thin window pillars and wheel alignment. The Custom Volkswagen guide covers the earlier casting separately.
When browsing loose Hot Wheels, keep the roof decoration, base material and any replaced parts together in the description.
Recognizing the Herfy’s Volkswagen
The Herfy’s promotion uses an orange Volkswagen with yellow Herfy’s lettering on the sides and a black, yellow and green insect design on the roof. The catalog entry specifies black interior, blue glazing, an unpainted Hong Kong base and redline wheels.
South Texas Diecast groups this promotion under 1974. The former 1975 blog title was not enough evidence to assign a production year. Record the visible promotional markings first and keep any date attribution tied to its source.
The main casting photograph shows the regular orange Volkswagen. The promotional bag photograph in this section shows the Herfy’s version. A roof design or orange finish alone does not establish the promotion. Ask for clear views of both side logos, the roof and the underside; replacement decals need to be disclosed.
