1971 De Tomaso Mangusta Collector Guide
The Mangusta’s opening rear covers are the detail that makes you stop and look. Raised together, they stand above the low coupe like two small wings. The orange release lets the body shape lead; the green number 23 car adds a much busier racing look.

The Mangusta’s split rear engine covers
The 2021 orange GLH83 and 2023 green HNL22 use distinctly different decoration. Orange has a simple dark side stripe and bright wheels. Green adds a black front section, number 23 panels, De Tomaso side lettering, and gold wheel hubs. Their rear engine covers are worth viewing both open and closed.

Choosing one for your collection
Ask for a photograph with both engine covers shut before judging the opening feature. Their fit is part of the appearance of the rear bodywork. Inspect the hinges and edges without forcing them, and avoid lifting the model by either cover.
The low nose is another place to check for paint loss. A front view makes the small headlights and black grille easier to judge. On boxed examples, distinguish marks in the acrylic cover from marks on the car beneath it.
Collector questions
Do the passenger doors open upward?
The opening gull-wing panels on these RLC releases cover the rear engine bay. They are not the passenger doors.
