Johnny Lightning Classic Gold vs Muscle Cars USA: Choose Your Lineup

Six Johnny Lightning Classic Gold 2022 Release 2 Set B cars, including a green Nissan 300ZX and red Mazda RX-7

Choose Johnny Lightning Classic Gold or Muscle Cars USA by the vehicles in the exact release. Classic Gold 2022 Release 2 Set B suits a shelf that mixes Japanese coupes with American performance cars. Muscle Cars USA 2025 Release 1 Set A suits a collection built around Camaros, a Yenko Nova and a Mr. Norm’s Super Bee. Classic Gold also includes American muscle cars, so the line name alone will not settle the choice.

The useful question is which assortment gives you more cars you want to keep. These three six-car sets show how much the answer changes between releases.

Three actual six-car assortments, all listed at 1:64 scale
Release and item code Regular six-car selection What it adds to a collection
Classic Gold 2022 Release 2 Set B
JLCG029B
1984 Nissan 300ZX; 1982 Mazda RX-7; 1962 Plymouth Savoy Max Wedge; 1986 Ford Mustang SVO; 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator; 2012 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Japanese coupes beside American performance cars from several decades.
Classic Gold 2025 Release 1 Set A
JLCG033A
1967 Ford Bronco; 1975 Chevrolet Camaro LT; 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS; 1971 Dodge Challenger R/T; 2003 Chevrolet Corvette convertible; 1970 Dodge Coronet Super Bee. An American selection with a Bronco, coupes and an open-top Corvette.
Muscle Cars USA 2025 Release 1 Set A
JLMC034A
1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28; 2002 Nickey Camaro ZL1; 1970 Nova Yenko Deuce; 1970 Mr. Norm’s Dodge Super Bee; 1974 Pontiac GTO; 1987 Pontiac Firebird GTA. A performance theme with Nickey, Yenko and Mr. Norm’s subjects.

The 300ZX and RX-7 are a clear reason to choose the 2022 Classic Gold set if you want Japanese subjects. They are absent from the other two assortments here. Conversely, the 2025 Classic Gold set is entirely American: its variety comes from the Bronco, the convertible and the different coupes, rather than from a mix of vehicle manufacturers’ home countries.

Muscle Cars USA 2025 Release 1 Set A has a tighter performance theme, but it is not limited to 1960s and 1970s cars. Its 2002 Nickey Camaro and 1987 Firebird give you later subjects too. For a display organized by decade, those two cars matter as much as the more familiar muscle-era names.

If you keep models in their packaging, the Muscle Cars USA photo offers another useful distinction: the Nickey, Yenko and Mr. Norm’s designs are prominent parts of the cards. If you display the cars loose, give more weight to the models, paint and decoration you will actually see on the shelf.

Two Super Bees explain the overlap

The Banana Yellow David Kruk number 1 Super Bee is a Classic Gold release, reference JLCG033-JLSP389B. The Hemi Orange Mr. Norm’s Super Bee is a Muscle Cars USA release, reference JLMC034-JLSP384A. Both represent a 1970 Dodge Coronet Super Bee, yet their decoration creates a different focal point.

The yellow car carries a number 1 and competition-style graphics. The orange car pairs black stripes with the Mr. Norm’s identity. Choose the yellow version for the numbered-car theme or the orange version to accompany the dealer-themed cars in the USA assortment. There is also a good reason to collect both if your subject is the Super Bee itself.

Both exact product descriptions specify rubber tires, a diecast metal body and chassis, an opening hood and a length of approximately 2.875 inches. Those shared specifications do not establish a quality tier between the two lines. Here, the meaningful difference is which version of the car you want.

Opening features belong to the individual model

An opening hood on those Super Bees does not make it a feature of every Classic Gold or Muscle Cars USA car. The Classic Gold 2003 Corvette convertible in Anniversary Red Metallic, reference JLCG033-JLSP387B, is specifically listed with no opening panels.

That Corvette can still suit an open-top display, but it will not satisfy someone who wants to pose a hood open. A convertible body and an operating panel answer different questions. When an opening feature is part of your plan, use the exact model’s description instead of extending a set-level statement to all six cars.

Decide whether you want a set or a single

Read the six-car list as six separate choices. If the Nissan and Mazda are the reason you like Classic Gold, consider whether the four American cars also belong in your collection. If your aim is one particular Super Bee, the matching single may make more sense than building a shelf around an assortment you only partly want.

Keep the release year, release number, set letter and item code together when comparing offers. “Classic Gold Set B” alone does not distinguish the 2022 assortment here from a different year’s Set B. Once you have settled on the 2025 Classic Gold lineup, our 2025 Release 1 Set A versus Set B guide compares its alternate finishes.

Classic Gold and Muscle Cars USA questions

Can I mix the two lines in one display?

Yes. The sets and singles compared here are listed at 1:64 scale. You can organize them around a car model, decade or color instead of a product-line label. The two Super Bee versions are a useful starting pair for that approach.

Does “2025 Release 1” mean the cars depict 2025 vehicles?

No. It identifies the product release. The Muscle Cars USA set discussed here includes vehicles ranging from a 1969 Camaro to a 2002 Nickey Camaro. Use the year attached to each vehicle when building a period display.

Does a six-car assortment guarantee a White Lightning chase?

No. The assortment descriptions allow for a possible chase substitution, but do not promise one. A substitution replaces a regular car; it does not turn the set into a seven-car purchase. Choose an assortment you want for its regular selection.
