Start Customizing Hot Wheels & Matchbox

Hobby Learning Center / Start Here

Begin with one inexpensive donor car, a simple wheel change and a project plan. Measure the exact casting before ordering parts because 1:64 diecast wheels, axles, chassis and body clearances are not universal.

Choose the right first project

  • Wheel swap: the simplest place to learn axle removal, stance and rolling clearance.
  • Body and wheel build: adds drilling, body preparation, paint and reassembly.
  • Detail build: may add interior work, trim, decals and clear finish after the basic fit is proven.

For a guided starting point, browse Build Your Own Hot Wheels kits and Build Your Own Matchbox kits. Review the exact included items on each listing rather than assuming every kit contains the same tools or parts.

Build in this order

  1. Choose and inspect the donor. Photograph the car, underside and wheel position before disassembly.
  2. Read the project guidance. Start with the customizing guide, parts guide and donor casting cross-reference.
  3. Measure before ordering. Check front and rear wheel diameter, tire width, usable axle length, chassis spacing, fender clearance and ride height.
  4. Open the casting carefully. Secure the work, use eye protection and keep rotating tools away from hands, loose clothing and finished surfaces.
  5. Test-fit the chassis and wheels. Confirm that each wheel turns and that the tires do not rub before paint or permanent assembly.
  6. Prepare the body. Remove contamination, correct only the defects you intend to repair and use products compatible with the body material and planned finish.
  7. Prime, paint and cure. Follow the coating manufacturer’s surface, ventilation, temperature and cure-time instructions. Do not trap uncured layers under decals or clear coat.
  8. Apply decals only after the surface is ready. Browse printable waterslide decal downloads and follow the printer, paper, sealing and application requirements stated for the exact file and material.
  9. Reassemble and roll-test. Verify alignment, clearance and secure assembly before displaying or handling the finished car.

Compatibility and safety rules

  • Brand, scale and appearance alone do not prove fit.
  • Do not claim a wheel or axle is an exact fit without measurements or a verified fitment record.
  • Use ventilation and the personal protective equipment required by the tool, adhesive, coating or solvent manufacturer.
  • Keep blades, drills, heat, chemicals and small parts away from children and pets.
  • Dispose of coatings, solvents, blades and contaminated materials according to their instructions and local requirements.

Your next step

Choose one donor, decide whether the goal is a wheel swap or full repaint, measure it and gather only the parts required for that build. When it is finished, share the project through Show Us Your Build.
