Plastic Cement vs CA vs PVA: Model Kit Glue Guide

There is no single model glue that is best for every part. Plastic cement works by softening compatible styrene surfaces so they bond together. Cyanoacrylate, usually called CA or super glue, bonds many dissimilar materials. PVA-style clear adhesives are useful when you want a gentler bond around transparent parts or scenery.
Plastic cement: best for compatible styrene joints
On traditional styrene kits, plastic cement can create a strong welded joint because it softens the mating surfaces before the solvent evaporates. It is ideal for body halves, chassis parts and other structural styrene-to-styrene connections when the kit material is compatible.
Thin cement vs thicker cement
Thin liquid cement can flow into a close-fitting seam by capillary action. Thicker cement offers more working time and can stay where it is placed. Neither is a substitute for poor fit; test-fit parts first.
CA: useful for resin, metal and photo-etch
CA does not rely on dissolving styrene in the same way. It is commonly used for resin, metal detail parts and photo-etched components. It can bond quickly, so alignment and dry fitting matter.
PVA and canopy-safe adhesives
Clear parts can fog when exposed to some adhesive fumes or when glue smears across the surface. PVA-type or canopy-safe adhesives are useful when lower bond strength is acceptable and a clear, forgiving joint is more important than instant strength.
Epoxy has a different role
Two-part epoxy can be useful for heavy or mixed-material joints that need gap filling and more working time. It is usually unnecessary for ordinary styrene seams and can add bulk where a thin joint is preferable.
Less adhesive is usually cleaner
Excess glue can squeeze onto visible plastic, soften detail or create cleanup work. Apply the smallest controlled amount that wets the intended joint.
Match the glue to the kit material
Read the exact instructions for the model and the adhesive. Browse current Revell, MPC and AMT projects at Muncle Mikes, then choose supplies based on what the specific kit actually contains.
Bottom line
Use plastic cement for compatible styrene, CA for many resin/metal/photo-etch tasks and a canopy-safe PVA-style adhesive when clear parts need a gentler bond. The material combination determines the glue.
