Plastruct 95134 RC-5 Concentric Reducer: Five-Pack Scratchbuilding Guide

Plastruct 95134 RC-5 Concentric Reducer Fitting

Plastruct 95134 is a five-piece pack of RC-5 concentric reducer fittings for scratchbuilt piping and industrial detail. Each fitting transitions from a larger pipe diameter to a smaller one while keeping both pipe runs on the same centerline.

That geometry is the main reason to choose a concentric reducer. It creates a symmetrical step-down that looks appropriate in many process, utility and mechanical systems. The part is useful in model railroads, architectural models, industrial displays, dioramas, school projects and original scale-model builds.

Plastruct 95134 at a glance

  • Maker: Plastruct
  • Product: RC-5 concentric reducer fitting
  • Manufacturer item: 95134
  • Pack quantity: Five fittings
  • Material: White ABS plastic
  • Purpose: Joining a larger model pipe to a smaller pipe on a common centerline
  • Typical uses: Model-railroad industries, refineries, processing plants, utility rooms, architectural models and scratchbuilt machinery

Concentric versus offset: choose the shape deliberately

A concentric reducer narrows evenly around its axis. Viewed from the end, the smaller opening remains centered inside the larger one. That makes it a natural choice for vertical piping, suspended pipe racks and installations where a balanced transition is visually appropriate.

An offset reducer shifts one side of the pipe instead of keeping both ends centered. The two types communicate different construction logic in a model. Before installing RC-5 fittings, compare your reference photographs and decide whether a centered transition matches the real system you are representing.

Confirm fit before cutting or bonding

The live product record identifies the part and pack quantity but does not provide every mating diameter. Use the package information and a physical dry fit to confirm compatibility with the tubing or pipe in your project. Do not assume that “RC-5” is a universal plumbing size outside the Plastruct system.

Slide the larger and smaller pipe sections into position without adhesive. Check three things: the joint seats fully, the centerlines remain straight, and the reducer does not force either pipe sideways. If the fit is tight, inspect for a burr or an out-of-square cut before removing material from the fitting.

A clean installation sequence

  1. Cut the pipe square. Use an appropriate modeling saw or cutter and support the tubing so it does not collapse.
  2. Deburr the ends. Remove only enough material to create a clean mating edge.
  3. Dry-fit the complete run. Include elbows, valves, supports and wall penetrations before committing to one joint.
  4. Mark orientation. A light pencil line helps preserve alignment when the parts are separated for bonding.
  5. Use a compatible adhesive. Follow the adhesive maker's instructions for ABS plastic and test on scrap when combining different materials.
  6. Hold the centerline. A simple jig, straightedge or graph-paper plan can prevent the reducer from setting at an angle.
  7. Allow a full cure. Do not load the joint with long pipe runs or paint until the bond has developed.

Bonding and finishing safely

Solvent cements and many hobby adhesives produce vapors and can mark plastic surfaces. Work with ventilation, protect your eyes and skin, and keep caps closed when the product is not in use. Apply a controlled amount from the joint side that will be least visible. Excess solvent can soften detail or leave a glossy scar.

White ABS is easy to inspect before painting because gaps and misalignment remain visible. Fill only after the joint has cured, then sand carefully so the reducer keeps its symmetrical profile. Wash away sanding dust and test the chosen primer or paint on spare ABS or an offcut before coating the finished assembly.

Scene-building ideas

One five-pack can support a repeated industrial detail rather than a single isolated fitting. Use the reducers across parallel process lines, on a pump manifold, above storage tanks or inside a mechanical room. Repetition makes the piping system look designed, while small changes in valve placement and support spacing keep the scene from becoming too uniform.

For a model railroad, place the fittings where viewers can understand the transition from a main line to a smaller branch. Adding pipe supports, flanges, gauges or warning-color bands can make the reducer read as part of a functioning system rather than an unexplained shape.

Final buying check

Confirm Plastruct item 95134, the RC-5 concentric form and the five-piece pack. Check the package dimensions against the pipe used in your project before permanent assembly.
