Plan Your McLaren F1 DIY Hot Wheels Build

The McLaren F1 DIY Hot Wheels kit gives you a stripped body to finish around the F1's low roof, sculpted doors and rear deck. Plan the wheel fit and the way the body sits over its inserts before painting. The current F1 kit lists a 10 mm front and 10 mm rear factory wheel setup; that reference is different from the separately sold McLaren P1 kit.
Understand the F1 body before choosing a finish
The photos show the bare shell with its angular side relief, small roof intake and openings over the rear deck. A second view separates the body from the base and glazing, making it easier to see which shapes belong to the metal shell and which are supplied by the inserts underneath it. The assembled side view then shows the completed outline without a painted finish.
Those details give you several ways to keep the project readable at this small size. You can let one body color carry the shape, or plan restrained detail painting around the molded openings and trim. Decide where the body color will stop before beginning; a heavy coating across an edge or opening can soften the detail you wanted to show.

Test the assembly while the body is bare
Set the inserts into place and bring the body and base together without adhesive. Check the glazing around the windshield and side-window openings, then look along the lower body edge to see whether it sits evenly. If an insert is out of position, correct it before judging the wheel clearance.
Turn each wheel with the body in place. The open wheel arches in a separated shell do not show the full assembled clearance. A wheel that seems clear while you hold the parts apart may touch the body or base after they are seated. Make this check before painting, then repeat it after the finish has cured.
The kit is prepared for painting and designed to click together. The listing allows model glue or rubber cement for extra hold. Choose an adhesive suitable for the materials and follow its directions; use it after the pieces fit correctly, rather than to pull a misaligned assembly closed.
F1 and P1 kits need different wheel planning
These are separate McLaren castings in the MM catalog. Do not carry a wheel-size note from one listing over to the other just because both names begin with McLaren.
| DIY kit | Front | Rear | Planning consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| McLaren F1 — the subject here | 10 mm | 10 mm | Start by comparing equal-diameter front and rear options, then check the actual fit. |
| McLaren P1 — separate kit | 10 mm | 12 mm | Its listed setup uses a larger rear wheel, so the F1 reference does not describe that project. |
These figures are catalog references, not a promise that every wheel of the named diameter will fit. Measure wheel width, axle length and inner spacing as well as diameter, and check body clearance on the kit you have. The separate McLaren P1 kit has its own photos and parts layout if that is the car you intended to build.

Keep the paint plan practical
Handle the body by its stronger sections while working around the roof and window openings. Choose paint and primer for the actual material, and follow the coating manufacturer's preparation and curing directions. Keep mating surfaces free of heavy buildup so the inserts and base can return to the position you established in the dry fit.
The product's variation note says wheel style, interior color and window color may differ from the photos. If your planned finish depends on a particular window or interior color, confirm that detail before buying paint to match it. The gallery is useful for the F1's body shape and assembly layout; it does not offer a guaranteed choice of every component color.

McLaren F1 DIY questions
Is this a finished custom?
No. It is a stripped, paint-ready Hot Wheels project for your own finish and reassembly. The assembled bare-metal photo illustrates the shape of the kit.
Does the 10 mm reference guarantee replacement-wheel fit?
No. Width, axle length, inner spacing and body clearance still need checking. Test the complete assembly before final fixing.
Are the F1 and P1 the same kit?
No. MM lists them as different castings, with different galleries and factory wheel references. This article's product card leads to the F1 kit.
Will every component match the photo's color?
The listing expressly allows wheel style, interior color and window color to vary. Ask about any specific color requirement before ordering.
