Matchbox The Movie Toys in 2026: A Collector's Format Guide

Matchbox has a timely new collecting theme in 2026: Matchbox The Movie. Apple's official film page lists October 9, 2026 as the release date. Mattel's movie range includes a collector multipack, a director-themed diorama and a mountain chase playset. Compare those formats before deciding whether you want a packaged scene, loose vehicles or an interactive playset.
This guide's manufacturer details were checked September 30, 2026. The MM cars photographed farther down are separate catalog examples, not the official film editions. Check the current seller's product page for movie-product availability and exact contents.
Three different formats
| Official product | Verified manufacturer contents | Useful purchase question |
|---|---|---|
| Desert Chase Escape 4-Pack, JMB53 | Four 1:64 vehicles: Land Rover 6x6, two Toyota Tacomas and Toyota 4Runner | Do you want the four-car group and scene packaging? |
| Director Diorama, JNM21 | Sam Hargrave mini figure, 1968 Mustang Fastback and Mercedes-Benz G-Class camera vehicle | Is the behind-the-scenes display your collecting goal? |
| Mountain Helicopter Escape, JMG57 | Playset, two 1:64 vehicles and a helicopter | Do you want an interactive scene and space for it? |
The Desert Chase listing describes movie decoration and a packaging backdrop. The Director Diorama includes a camera crane on the G-Class and identifies a chase-damaged Mustang. The mountain playset is listed at 22 inches tall. These details belong to their specific products; they should not be transferred to an ordinary Mustang, 4Runner or another similarly named Matchbox.
Check a boxed set and a loose offer differently
For a sealed set, compare the exact product identifier, stated contents and visible package condition. For a loose offer, inventory every car and accessory separately. A seller's broad “movie set” title cannot replace a list of what actually arrives.
If a display depends on a figure, camera attachment, helicopter or backdrop, confirm that component's inclusion. The Director Diorama's manufacturer description says one director figure is included; other pictured mini figures are excluded. A promotional image can show more than the sale contents.
Similar vehicle names do not establish film editions
A miniature named 1968 Mustang or Toyota 4Runner is not automatically the film release. Compare exact decoration, included parts, packaging and product identifier. Keep factory movie products, ordinary releases and aftermarket customs in separate collection records. Modified tires do not establish movie accuracy or factory-exclusive status.
See MM's existing customs separately
The following is the MM 1968 Ford Mustang custom listing, an existing completed custom offer. Its gallery is useful for evaluating that car's finish, stance and condition; it is not a photograph of the Director Diorama Mustang.

The blue MM 2018 Toyota 4Runner custom has black six-spoke wheels and knobby rubber tires. It is another separately offered completed custom, not the Desert Chase 4Runner.

Choose by purpose
For a factory film collection, choose the exact official edition and preserve its contents record. For a custom shelf, choose the completed MM vehicle whose photographed setup you enjoy. For a build project, review the active DIY offer and needed supplies. A clear purchase goal is more useful than an unsupported promise of future rarity or a stock claim attached to an article.
