Bachmann HO Great Northern #2357 40-Foot Box Car (16001) Guide

The Bachmann 16001 HO 40-foot box car represents Great Northern #2357. This guide focuses on the exact road name and number, the details Bachmann lists for the model, and the checks that help establish whether it suits a particular HO roster or layout.

How to identify Bachmann 16001

• Manufacturer: Bachmann
• Item number: 16001
• Road name and number: Great Northern #2357
• Scale: HO, 1:87
• UPC: 022899160016
• Model dimensions: 6.5 in. long × 1.5 in. wide × 2 in. high

These identifiers matter when similar 40-foot cars share a general shape. Match both 16001 and #2357 when comparing listings or adding the car to a collection record. Bachmann describes the 40-foot boxcar as a common freight-car type used for dry goods and mixed loads; the specific lettering and number make this release the Great Northern choice.

Details that affect display and operation

Bachmann lists painted body details and precision graphics, a detailed underframe, separately applied roofwalk and brake wheel, and opening, sliding corrugated doors. The doors add a visible feature for display, but their presence alone does not establish that a load or interior accessory is included.

The model is listed with magnetically operated E-Z Mate Mark II couplers, detailed trucks with see-through sideframes, and blackened metal wheels with RP25 contours. Those specifications are useful for a roster checklist. Before mixing rolling stock, compare coupler height and type, wheel gauge, and clearances against the equipment already running on your layout. Check the current Bachmann documentation for any installation or service question.

Is this the right car for your layout?

Start with scale: this is an HO model at 1:87, not an N-scale car. Then confirm that Great Northern #2357 is the specific road-name and number combination you want. Its listed 6.5-inch length helps with shelf spacing and train planning, while actual clearance needs depend on curves, adjacent structures, and the rest of the consist.

For operating use, inspect coupler alignment and truck movement after unpacking and test the car at low speed before placing it in a longer train. For display, compare the side views and underframe details with neighboring cars so the lettering, era impression, and finish fit the scene you are building. These are practical checks; they do not imply a minimum curve radius or universal compatibility beyond the manufacturer’s stated specifications.

Quick verification checklist

• Confirm item 16001 and road number 2357.
• Confirm HO scale (1:87) for the intended layout.
• Compare the listed 6.5 × 1.5 × 2-inch model dimensions with available clearance.
• Review the coupler and wheel specifications against the rest of the train.
• Check the current product page for live offer details and any updated manufacturer information.
