Choose a Matte Finish with Vallejo Premium 63.062

Vallejo Premium Matt Varnish 63.062 is a 200 ml clear finishing varnish for choosing a matte final surface. Use it when the paintwork needs less shine, and judge it on a test piece that includes the actual paint and weathering beneath it. A change in sheen can change how those colors and effects look.
Choose the finish by the surface you are depicting
A dusty body panel, a polished display finish and a worn floor do not need the same sheen. Decide which parts should look matte before coating the whole model. If a scene includes intentionally shiny details, plan to mask them or apply their final finish separately.
| Finish | Visual purpose | Planning decision |
|---|---|---|
| Matte | Reduce visible shine | Useful when reflections distract from a weathered or subdued surface |
| Satin | Keep a moderate sheen | Consider it when a completely flat surface would lose the intended appearance |
| Gloss | Create stronger reflections | Choose it when the depicted finish is visibly polished |
This table describes the appearance you are choosing, not a promise that different varnish products share a formula or application method. Follow the instructions for the specific varnish.
Build a sample of the complete finish
Paint a spare part or test panel with the same base coat and any washes or weathering you plan to cover. Let each layer reach the recoating condition specified by its manufacturer. Then apply the varnish to one part of the sample, leaving another part available for comparison.
Inspect the dry result under the lighting you will use for display. Look at both the overall sheen and the details: has a dark wash remained distinct, has the color changed in appearance, and are the highlights still doing the job you intended? A sample answers those questions more usefully than a wet surface in the spray booth.
Control coverage around recesses
Prepare and apply the varnish according to the bottle instructions, then test the spray before approaching the model. Work with controlled coverage and inspect corners where liquid can collect. Adding a heavy wet coat to chase a missed area can leave a different result from the surrounding surface.
If a sample turns cloudy, uneven or unexpectedly glossy, pause and check preparation, layer compatibility and application before repeating the coat on the model. Do not hide the problem under more varnish until you understand what changed.
Questions before you start
Is 63.062 a white paint?
It is Premium Matt Varnish, reference 63.062, supplied in a 200 ml bottle. The white swatch in the product image should not be read as an opaque white paint color.
Will one coat make every surface equally matte?
Coverage, the underlying finish and the application affect the result. Test the full paint sequence and assess the dried sample before deciding whether another coat is needed.
How long should I wait before applying it?
Use the recoating instructions for the paint or weathering layer underneath and the varnish directions. A surface that feels dry is not, by itself, a universal recoating schedule.
