Olds 442 Police CruiserStickers, printing and the changing roof light
The Olds-based Police Cruiser changed more than its door markings. The hood, roof equipment and base all help distinguish the versions. Start with those parts before accepting a year written on a loose-car label.
1973 uses stickers and an opening hood
The 1973 Hong Kong Police Cruiser derives from the original Olds 442. It has a black interior, an opening hood and sticker decoration. The pictured door label is visibly different from printing directly on the body.
Check label edges without peeling them. Missing stickers do not make a car an undocumented factory error, and reproduced stickers should be described as replacements. Inspect a working hood gently for hinge damage and glue.
Flying Colors changed the decoration and parts
From 1974, the white Hong Kong car uses black tampo printing. Early versions retain an opening hood; later ones have a cast-shut hood. A later roof revision replaces the separate beacon with a cast-in light bar, and the metal base gives way to plastic in 1976. Separate beacons are documented in red and blue.
Identify the hood type before trying to lift it. A cast-shut hood is not a stuck opening panel. Photograph the full underside and roof so a later part combination is not dated from the decoration alone.
Chief’s Special puts the body on fire duty
Chief’s Special uses the 1974 Police Cruiser body. The documented 1975–1976 Hong Kong version is red with a black interior and blue glazing. Early examples have a separate dome light; later ones use a light bar cast into the roof.
The rear quarter number and small lettering deserve a close view, not just the large Fire Department graphic. Inspect the roof around the light for glue and ask whether the equipment has been replaced.
Herfy’s offered a promotional version with the door logo shown here. Keep the decoration, roof equipment and any package history together in the record. A convincing logo alone cannot authenticate a loose car.
Keep the other police castings separate
The earlier Custom Police Cruiser is a different body. Later vehicles called Police Cruiser, and modern recreations of the Olds, should not be identified from these vintage photographs alone.
Compare hood type, roof parts, base, decoration and disclosed repairs when browsing loose examples. With a packaged offer, photograph the whole card and blister; an accompanying card is not automatically an originally sealed combination.
