This encyclopedia is an evidence-first guide to identifying Hot Wheels castings, separating exact releases, documenting variations, evaluating images and researching collector-market evidence. It does not assign a price from a casting name, a rarity label, an asking price or a similar-looking photograph.
Start with the casting family, move to the exact manufactured release, record the condition of the physical example, and only then compare completed sales that match the same release and condition.
A casting family is the underlying model and tooling. An exact release is one documented manufactured version. Your physical example is the specific loose or packaged item in front of you, including condition, completeness, originality and provenance.
A base copyright year is not automatically the release year. Compare the complete evidence set before deciding that two similar cars are the same release.
A useful variation should be repeatable and distinguishable. Normal shade drift, paint thickness, tampo alignment and assembly tolerance do not automatically create a recognized variation. Factory errors also need evidence because post-factory modifications can look similar.
Inspect rivets, base fit, axle installation, paint edges, graphics, packaging seals and the relationship between the car and its package. Restorations and customs can be excellent display pieces, but they should be disclosed.
Rarity describes supply or availability. Market value reflects what buyers have paid for the exact item in comparable condition. Demand, condition, originality, packaging and timing can matter as much as scarcity.
Use exact-release photographs whenever possible. A representative image can help identify a casting family but should not be treated as proof of an exact color, wheel, base, graphic or packaging combination.
Compare completed transactions that match the exact release and condition. Active asking prices can describe seller expectations, but they do not establish what a buyer paid. Keep loose and packaged examples separate unless the comparison explains the difference.
Collector records should change when better photographs, production details or completed sales become available. The goal is to preserve the strongest available evidence, not an old claim.
