History

In terms of ceremonial splendour, few can match the British military. Recognised globally by millions, this display of formal precision is deeply rooted in military heritage. Elite soldiers were designated to defend their flag, or colours, symbolising the honour and traditions of both past and present service members.

The Colour Party tradition dates back centuries, when regimental colours were crucial rallying points in battle. These flags were carried into combat by chosen officers and defended by seasoned soldiers, as losing them would disgrace the entire regiment. As warfare evolved and the practical battlefield use of colours diminished, their ceremonial importance only increased.

Today, Guards regiments uphold this proud tradition through meticulously organised ceremonies that highlight precision drill and impeccable presentation. The Colour Party remains central to military parades, from Trooping the Colour to memorial services, each movement performed with precision that reflects generations of military heritage. The soldiers chosen for these roles represent the finest of their regiments, entrusted with upholding centuries of tradition and honour.
