The 1972 Rear-Engine Mongoose is a dark-blue wedge dragster, not the earlier Mongoose funny car. Identify the body configuration before comparing a color, driver association or asking price.

Release and casting identity

The On Line Redline Guide documents the 1972 Hong Kong version with black interior, no glazing and an opening cockpit cover. It records clear or black front wheels and distinguishes the yellow Snake presentation of the shared casting.

Why the racing name is not enough

The reference explains that the Mongoose-liveried wedge was a Mattel release rather than an exact representation of a wedge car raced by Tom McEwen. A real-racing association should therefore not replace identification of the toy actually offered.

The earlier Mongoose funny car has a different body. Front-engine rails, rear-engine wedges and lift-body funny cars need separate inventory entries.

Inspect the narrow front end

Request a full underside view and both side profiles. Check the small front wheels and long nose for missing pieces, bending or repairs. Avoid judging wheel material through an overexposed image.

Look inside the cockpit where safely visible. An absence of glazing is not automatically a missing windscreen on this documented configuration. Operate an old cover gently, only on a structurally sound loose model.

Inspect graphics and rear running gear separately from the blue paint. Disclosed replacement wheels or a repainted body should remain part of the condition record.

Packaging and buyer comparison

Photograph the whole card, blister and attachment area. Clarify whether a loose accessory or display case is included. A package showing a similar dragster does not prove the car belongs to it.

Compare sold examples with the same identity, front-wheel configuration and condition. A high asking price for another Snake or Mongoose vehicle is not evidence of this model's realized value.

Separate racing association from replica identity

Label a display with the actual toy name and edition, then explain the racing association in a separate sentence. A Mongoose-liveried wedge miniature is not automatically a replica of a wedge that McEwen raced. That distinction lets the model tell the Hot Wheels story without rewriting the full-size racing record.

For condition, compare the two narrow front-wheel assemblies with the car resting level. Record a bent axle or missing projection before evaluating the blue finish. Measure the full nose-to-tail footprint and leave retrieval space so the model need not be lifted by its cockpit cover. The label, physical inspection and storage plan should refer to the same specific example.
