Hot Wheels Hairy Hauler: Forward-Opening Cockpit & Engine Inspection

Hairy Hauler is a concept car with a large blown engine behind a forward-opening cockpit, not an oversized-wheel truck. Its hinge and exhaust details deserve specific inspection.

Identify the original configuration

The Hairy Hauler reference records the 1971 U.S. and Hong Kong versions, white interiors and clear or blue glazing respectively. Its photographs compare exhaust crosspieces, hinges and underside details, including a hybrid example with mixed identifying features.

That evidence makes a multi-feature comparison more useful than assigning the entire car from its country wording alone.

Forward-opening cockpit

Request top and side views with the cockpit resting normally. On a sound loose example, ask for gentle movement that follows the actual hinge direction.

Inspect the mounting, glazing edges and interior for cracks or glue. Do not force an old cover farther simply because another release opens to a different angle.

Exposed engine and chassis condition

Photograph the exhaust crosspiece and all engine edges without lifting the miniature by them. Check the complete base and every wheel, including the far side.

Ask about repainted surfaces, replacement glazing and disassembly. Keep repaired components separate from normal chips in the condition record. A neatly assembled restoration does not automatically retain factory originality.

Year and purchase comparison

A 1973 listing needs evidence for that date; it is not the documented debut. Distinguish an original purchase or package record from a seller’s estimate.

Use the main Hairy Hauler guide. Compare completed sales by supported configuration, cockpit integrity, finish and package.

Record hinge construction before testing motion

Photograph the forward-opening cockpit’s resting position and hinge region with the body supported. If it moves freely, capture the inside only after the closed view. A different hinge appearance can be an identification clue; stiffness, glue and cracks are condition observations requiring their own description.

Compare exhaust cross pieces, base detail and cabin evidence together before assigning an early or later factory configuration. If the features do not align neatly, keep the observation open rather than assuming every combination is an untouched transitional car. Measure display height for the intended cockpit position and leave the exposed engine clear. Store the car by its body, never suspended from the hatch or engine.
