1990 Hot Wheels Purple Passion #87: Flames vs. Scallops

The 1990 Hot Wheels Purple Passion #87 has more than one early appearance. Compare the decoration and interior together before treating every purple, whitewall-equipped example as the same first-year car.

Two combinations to identify
The Purple Passion catalog records item 2173 in metallic purple with whitewall wheels, clear glazing and an unpainted Malaysia base. One 1990 version combines blue-and-yellow flames with a tan interior; another uses blue-and-green scallops with a red interior.
Read the artwork as a complete design, not just a list of colors. Request a hood-and-roof photograph, both sides and a clear look through the windows. An interior seen only through a shadow may be misidentified.
Original-year cars and later reissues
The catalog also lists a similar flame-decorated car in the 1992 Classic Collection five-pack, item 1629. A later 30th Anniversary package revisits the 1990 model. Neither a matching purple finish nor an anniversary reference to 1990 proves that a loose car came from an original 1990 package.
Mean Green Passion, Steel Passion, Pearl Passion and Gold Passion are separately cataloged releases. Their names and prices should not be combined into an appraisal of every Purple Passion. Ask for the whole original package when a first-year collection is your goal.
Inspect the custom-shaped body
Look along the long roof and upper fender edges in neutral light. Request rear-quarter views to see areas hidden in a straight side picture. Ask about chips, polishing, repainting and repairs rather than assuming a glossy surface is untouched.
Check whitewall printing on all four wheels. A rubbed white stripe is a condition issue, while a replacement wheel is an originality issue. Ask whether the body was opened or components changed, and keep those disclosures with the photographs.
Buy the kind of collectible you want
A loose original suits a shelf where the car’s shape and finish matter most. A carded purchase also requires checking blister cracks, lifting, hanger wear and the reverse of the card. A sealed-looking package is not automatically an undamaged or unrepaired package.
Explore loose Hot Wheels collector cars for current listings or finished customs with rubber tires for an aftermarket display. An exact Purple Passion #87 is not promised by those collection links. For your own finish, check the actual donor and inclusions in DIY Hot Wheels kits.
Purple Passion questions
Does a red interior automatically mean the car is wrong?
No. A red-interior scalloped version is documented. Compare all the details, and ask whether parts were exchanged.
Are all purple whitewall examples equally valuable?
No single value follows from that description. Compare dated completed sales of matching decoration, originality, condition and packaging, including shipping. Old catalog prices are not current valuations.
