Display Cases for ACME Models: Check Cars, Sprint Wings, SUVs and GT40s

Choose a display case by its usable interior dimensions and your model's intended pose—not by a generic 1:18 label. A sprint car, Blazer and Camaro can share a scale while needing different widths and heights. The larger 1:12 GT40 offers need a separate length check altogether.

Choose an ACME model for your display space

Begin with the closed model's footprint

The COPO Camaro is listed at approximately 10 inches long, 4 wide and 3 high. Those figures provide a starting point for a closed-car arrangement, not a minimum case size guaranteed to fit every projection.

Measure the usable area above the case base and inside its walls. Exterior case dimensions can include material thickness, a frame or a raised edge that reduces the space available to the model.

Check the limiting dimension for each body type

The Blazer K5 The Chief is listed at approximately 9.5 by 4.75 by 4 inches. It is shorter than the Camaro but wider and taller. A case selected only by length could therefore be the wrong choice.

The 1:18 Brent Marks sprint car is approximately 8 by 4 by 4.5 inches. Its wing height is a more important consideration than the relatively short model length. Leave room to lift the cover without touching the wing.

The 1:12 Masterpiece GT40 number 7 is approximately 14.25 by 6 by 3.25 inches. For example, a case with a 12-inch usable internal length is too short for that listed 14.25-inch model, regardless of how generously it is described as a model-car case.

Open panels change the space you need

An opening door increases width; a raised hood can increase height and the room needed above the nose. An open trunk or tailgate changes access requirements behind the vehicle. The product listings do not publish every open-panel measurement.

Set the actual model in the intended pose on a protected flat surface and measure the full envelope before choosing a close-fitting enclosure. Do not force a door or hood farther than its designed travel to fit a display concept.

A Drag Outlaws Camaro with its hood removed needs a safe place for that loose panel. A roof-off Blazer or wing-off sprint display has the same planning issue: detached pieces still occupy space.

Include figures and bases in the measurement

The Plymouth Loved Bird figure is listed at approximately 5 inches tall before making any assumption about the complete figure-and-stand envelope. An accessory can be taller than the car it accompanies.

Do not assume a clear case comes with a model merely because a photograph shows display presentation. Check the individual offer's inclusions, including any supplied base, then measure the complete arrangement.
