Vallejo Sterling Silver 77.161: Plan a Silver Metallic Base

Vallejo True Metallic Metal Airbrush Sterling Silver 77.161 bottle beside a silver color graphic

Sterling Silver 77.161 is Vallejo’s True Metallic Metal Airbrush silver, supplied in an 18 ml dropper bottle. It gives a miniature’s armor, fittings or mechanisms a silver metallic base color. The useful choice is where to leave that base visible and where shading or a different material should define the form.

Separate the metal surfaces before adding effects

On a figure with silver armor, identify the broad plates, recessed joints and small fasteners before painting. Start with a test piece that includes a flat surface and an edge. A dried silver sample makes it easier to judge whether neighboring cloth, leather or painted panels remain distinct.

Decide whether the intended subject needs clean metal, a weathered surface or a deliberately stylized finish. Sterling Silver supplies the color layer; dirt, corrosion, wear and historical material accuracy require their own painting choices and references. The example miniature in the product gallery illustrates a finish and is not included with the bottle.

Choose the Sterling Silver version for the painting step

Sterling Silver: formula and purpose
Version Reference Use
Airbrush 77.161 Matching metallic base tone formulated for spraying
Base 77.121 Metallic base color for brush work
Shade 77.141 Darker, non-metallic shading color with a satin finish
Light 77.101 Brighter metallic color for highlights

These are separate paints. This product supplies the Airbrush bottle; choose other versions for the steps your model needs.

Keep the silver layer controlled

  1. Remove surface dust and prepare a compatible primed sample. Surface preparation belongs before the metallic color, so correct obvious rough spots before spraying.
  2. Mix the paint as directed and check a small spray pattern. Set the airbrush according to its instructions and the result of the test, rather than borrowing a universal pressure setting.
  3. Build coverage with controlled passes and let the sample dry before judging it. Check the edge and recess as well as the broad face of the part.
  4. Try the planned shading and varnish on only part of the sample. Keep the remaining silver area unchanged so you can compare the effect of each later step.

Follow the paint label and airbrush instructions for spraying and cleanup, including the ventilation and protective measures specified for the products you use.

Frequently asked questions

Is the bottle 17 ml or 18 ml?

The current True Metallic Metal range is supplied in 18 ml dropper bottles. Sterling Silver Airbrush is reference 77.161; use that complete reference when matching the product.

Does Sterling Silver promise a mirror-chrome finish?

It is a metallic silver base color. Judge a dried sample for the finish you want; a bottle photograph is not a promise of a mirror-like result on every surface.

Which family member should I choose for brush painting?

Sterling Silver Base 77.121 is the matching base color for brush work. Airbrush 77.161 is formulated for spraying; Shade 77.141 and Light 77.101 are separate finishing choices.
