A8-3 vs. B6-4 vs. C6-5 Model Rocket Motors

Updated October 15, 2026.
A8-3, B6-4 and C6-5 are common 18 mm model-rocket motor designations, but they are not a three-step upgrade ladder for every rocket. Use one only when the complete code appears in the current instructions for the exact model and configuration.
What changes in the code?
- Letter: the total-impulse class. B provides a larger impulse range than A, and C larger than B.
- First number: average thrust in newtons. A motor with a higher number can deliver thrust differently even within a related size.
- Final number: the delay in seconds between powered flight and the recovery-system ejection event.
A8-3
A8-3 is commonly listed as a first-flight choice for several verified beginner launch sets in the current Muncle Mikes catalog. That does not make it universal. Check the rocket instructions, finished weight and field.
B6-4
B6-4 provides a different impulse class, thrust profile and four-second delay. Use it only when the exact rocket list includes B6-4. A rocket that approves another B motor or another delay does not automatically approve this code.
C6-5
C6-5 can produce a higher-energy flight with a five-second delay. It generally demands more field and recovery planning than a lower-impulse first flight. The NAR site-dimension table increases with installed total impulse.
How to choose among them
- Open the exact rocket instructions.
- Find every approved complete motor code.
- Consider the finished configuration and payload.
- Choose a field that meets current safety guidance.
- Select the approved code appropriate to the planned flight; do not substitute by diameter or letter.
Compare verified 18 mm motors and use the complete motor-selection guide.
Important booster warning
A code ending in -0 is a booster designation, not a normal delayed recovery motor. Do not use it alone unless the staged-rocket instructions specifically call for it.
