Airfix Sea King HC.4 vs. Puma HC.1: Helicopter Kit Buying Guide

Choose the Sea King HC.4 for that specific helicopter and a larger quoted display footprint, or the Puma HC.1 for a more compact 1:72 project. Both offer two marking choices, but their aircraft versions are not interchangeable with every rescue, naval or transport helicopter carrying the same family name.
Compare Airfix helicopter versions and scales
Sea King HC.4 A04056A: allow for the complete model
The Westland Sea King HC.4 A04056A lists 133 parts, two decal schemes and Skill Level 3. Its approximate quoted dimensions are 12 inches long by 10.25 inches across.
Choose it when the HC.4 version is the subject you want. A Sea King gift based on a particular color or service role needs the exact variant and markings checked; the family name alone is not enough to promise a match.
Use the instruction choices for the intended aircraft rather than assuming a different Sea King kit's accessories, color scheme or optional components are included.
Puma HC.1 AIRA03021VF: a smaller footprint
The Puma HC.1, supplier item AIRA03021VF, contains 112 listed parts and two marking options. The approximate overall dimensions are 7.87 by 7.87 inches.
This is the relevant choice for a Puma HC.1 collection, not a small substitute for a requested Sea King. Its Vintage Classics box identifies the release presentation; it should not be described as a newly designed tooling simply because the stock is new.
The box scene is artwork. The purchase remains an unassembled plastic kit requiring the builder to create the illustrated finish.
Rotor clearance matters more than fuselage length alone
The Sea King's quoted footprint exceeds the Puma's in both directions. Those dimensions should not be read as fuselage-only measurements or proof of every possible rotor position.
Plan room around the blade tips, above the rotor head and behind the tail. For a two-model shelf, include a gap between the complete outlines. Interleaving blades to make a display fit can leave very little margin for lifting or moving either model.
Blade folding, removable assemblies and powered motion are not established by these checked contents. Confirm the required configuration rather than assuming those features from another helicopter model.
Compare the building work, not just the part totals
The Puma has 21 fewer listed parts. That does not tell you exactly how much easier or faster it will be to build.
For either project, read the interior, glazing and rotor-installation stages before starting. Decide when enclosed areas need painting, protect clear pieces while finishing the body and keep rotor-related components organized until the instructions call for them.
A helicopter display can require a wider storage area during construction than a quick look at the fuselage suggests. Plan a safe place for the partly assembled model between sessions.
What to buy alongside the project
Both listings describe light-gray main parts and separate paint and cement requirements. A display stand is not included. Select the marking scheme first, then budget for the colors and tools you do not already own.
Choose the Sea King for HC.4 identity and its display presence, or the Puma for the HC.1 subject and smaller quoted footprint. For a different rotor layout, the Chinook versus Belvedere guide compares the tandem-rotor alternatives.
