Plan before buying track

Track length is not the same as table size

A circuit can fold a long running distance into a smaller footprint. Measure the assembled layout, then add reach, control and recovery space around it.

Start with six measurements

  • Usable length and width: Measure the actual table, floor or board area.
  • Edge clearance: Leave room between track and the outer edge where cars can leave the course.
  • Human reach: Make sure every crash point can be reached without leaning over fragile track.
  • Controller position: Plan where racers stand or sit without pulling cables across the layout.
  • Power location: Keep the power connection accessible and the cable path protected.
  • Storage path: Decide whether the layout stays assembled, folds, lifts or must be rebuilt after use.

Verified space information in the current catalog

Product Verified planning information Use it for
AFX Goliath 22040 The primary layout requires approximately 9 by 4 feet and uses 65 running feet of two-lane track. A large, long-course two-lane system.
AFX Super International 22157 Four lanes and 27 running feet of track. Use the current manufacturer layout sheet for the exact footprint selected. Four-person and group racing.
AFX Track Pack 21045 Adds 26 running feet and 40 pieces to an existing system; it does not define one required footprint. Custom expansion after the available space is measured.

Plan for access, not only fit

A layout that technically fits can still be frustrating. If the far corner cannot be reached, every derailment stops the race. A slightly smaller course with clear access often works better than the maximum amount of track squeezed into the room.

Temporary and permanent layouts need different decisions

Temporary layouts benefit from repeatable plans, labeled sections, track clips and storage containers organized by part number. Permanent layouts need a stable surface, protected power routing, maintenance access and enough clearance for scenery.

Before adding elevation or scenery

Check bridge-support spacing, car clearance, sight lines and whether the raised track blocks access to lower sections. Scenery should be installed only after the operating layout runs reliably.
