Hot Wheels CAT Dump Truck #38: Metal vs. Plastic Bed Guide

A “1990 Hot Wheels CAT Dump Truck” needs a closer package check. The reference reviewed here documents yellow #38 with a metal bed in 1991 and a plastic bed in 1992; the old year in this page's URL is not proof of a separate 1990 release.

Identify the CAT-family dump truck
The casting catalog records item 1171 with a yellow body, black interior, unpainted Malaysia base and yellow construction-style tires. A metal-bed example also appears on a 1989 experimental #38 card. The casting's earlier CAT-branded history begins in 1980.
Bed material is a component detail
Ask the seller to identify the bed material and show its edges, underside and attachment points. Do not scratch the finish or force a joint to check it. A metal-looking surface in a photograph is not enough to establish construction.
Compare the original casting and any molded branding rather than importing the lettering of later CAT releases. An undocumented badge or decal should not be used to certify a special edition.
Why the date is qualified
The original address remains available to older links. The title and guide now focus on the supported component comparison instead of asserting an unsupported year. Absence from one catalog is not proof that every possible packaging variation has been ruled out.
Request the original card front and reverse when a date affects your purchase. A loose truck matching #38 may not reveal which card or set supplied it.
Inspect bed movement and the running gear
Ask for rear and side photographs showing the bed pivot, upper rails and front corners. Check for cracks, adhesive or transferred parts. Request normal, unforced operation and a clear description of any repair.
Compare all wheels and the vehicle's stance. A truck with a clean cab but a damaged bed should be compared with similarly incomplete examples, not a sealed original by default.
Choose a construction collectible or a project
Check individual offers in loose Hot Wheels. This article does not promise a particular #38 in stock. For a larger assembly activity, browse model-building kits and verify the subject, scale and supplies. Kits and finished diecast models are different purchases.
Dump-truck questions
Does #38 alone establish bed material?
No. Both metal and plastic beds appear in the release history.
Does an early catalog price establish current value?
No. Compare dated completed sales with matching material, originality, condition and packaging, including delivery costs.
