Hot Wheels Showcase: Hot Wheels Heavy Hitter The CAT Bulldozer

The Hot Wheels CAT Bulldozer is a rugged die-cast casting that brings construction-site realism to the miniature world of Hot Wheels. First introduced in 1980 as part of the Workhorses series, this model was designed by Larry Wood and quickly became a standout for its bold design and functional features.

Inspired by the real-life Caterpillar bulldozers, the original casting featured moving rubber treads and a functional blade that could be raised and lowered—rare mechanical details that added play value and realism. The model was painted in Caterpillar’s signature yellow, with a sturdy plastic base and no windows, emphasizing its industrial aesthetic.

Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, the CAT Bulldozer saw multiple releases, including appearances in the Action Machines and Dirt Machines lines. Some versions even came packaged with a vial of “clean dirt,” adding a tactile element to the construction theme. In 1997, the casting was also used in Matchbox’s Dirt Machines series, further cementing its place in the world of miniature heavy equipment.

Later retooled versions of the CAT Bulldozer removed the moving parts: the rubber treads were replaced with static plastic ones, and the blade became fixed as part of the base. Small plastic wheels were added underneath for smoother rolling, and the “CAT” branding was eventually dropped, though the model retained its iconic yellow color.

Despite these changes, the CAT Bulldozer remains a favorite among collectors who appreciate its early mechanical ingenuity and nostalgic charm. It’s a perfect example of how Hot Wheels blended realism with playability, turning a utilitarian machine into a miniature marvel that still holds its ground in the world of die-cast collectibles.
